Scientists charged with manslaughter for failing to predict earthquakes. This is absolutely insane. Where are the Sagans, Mr. Wizards and Billy Nye’s when we need them?  We need scientists to be more prominent in the public eye. Neil Degrasse Tyson, Michio Kaku, Brian Greene, and Richard Dawkins are the only ones I can really think of that are most prominent, but I don’t think they...

Human cell becomes living laser! →
“Lasers started from physics and are viewed as engineering devices,” says Seok-Hyun Yun, an optical physicist at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, who created the ‘living laser’ with his colleague Malte Gather. “This is the first time that we have used biological materials to build a laser and generate light from something that...

Is Kurzweil’s future arriving? →
Ray Kurzwiel is one of my biggest hero’s.  I highly recommend “The Singularity is Near” if you ever feel the need to COMPLETELY blow your mind. Just trust me.  Best thing you can ever do for your brain is read that book.

TEO is still alive!
Hey everybody, First off, I want to say thanks to everyone who has added this blog to their subscriptions.  I’ve gotten a ton of notifications from everyone who has added this The Empirical Observer (TEO) to their tumblr feeds - even when I haven’t been posting anything lately! With that said, I also want to let you know that although I haven’t posted anything in a while, I...

Human-Like Brain Found in Worm →
For the first time, a structure comparable to our cerebral cortex has been found in an invertebrate — a humble marine ragworm. THE GIST: A marine ragworm has brain structures that researchers now believe are directly related to the human brain. Other invertebrates likely also possess the brain structures, which correspond to our cerebral cortex. The origins of the human brain can now be...

The Singularity Is Near →
I began to read a new book.  It’s called The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology. I’m only 50 pages in and I’ve decided that this is probably one of the most fascinating books I’ve ever read.  All of my fascination with science, biology, technology, the future, the past, evolution… EVERYTHING has come down to this book.  It emcompasses everything...

Cosmic X-ray blast blinds satellite →
Scientists have identified a dazzling burst of X-rays so bright that they blinded a camera that had been set up to watch the event. The X-ray blast is the brightest ever detected from an object outside our own galaxy. The X-rays had been travelling for over 5 billion years before being detected by the X-ray telescope on board the Swift satellite: a joint NASA, UK, and Italian mission. The...

What an obvious concept.  If intelligent life exists (and it is statistically more than likely), wouldn’t it be obvious that if they know about our existence, they would already be sending us signals?  The purpose being that simply by receiving and responding to said signals, we would be telling them that we have finally developed our technology to a point where communication can be made...

This is a letter from President Barack Obama to launch a Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.  I’m very grateful to have a president who can understand and support science and scientific findings.  President Obama’s interest and support in the sciences couldn’t have come at a better time.  Many new sciences are emerging.  They have been - and will continue...
